&
Run for the Border Half Marathon
Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 11:00 a.m.
Information Specific for the 20 Miler
Dear Eastern States 20 Mile Runner,
Thank you for entering the Eastern States 20 Mile, scheduled for Sunday, March 29 at 11:00 a.m. Please read this information sheet carefully. Following these procedures on race day will ensure a smooth flow and enjoyable day for everyone. Good luck and have a great race!
Don Allison, Race Director
Start: The race will start on Wentworth Street, a short walk (four-tenths of a mile) from the Traip Academy, where we will meet before the race. To get to Traip Academy, from Route 95, take exit #2 over bridge (going North) or the last Kittery exit going South. Turn right at the end of the ramp (going south). At the rotary, go around past Dairy Queen and bear right onto rte 236 (Rogers Rd). Follow that for about two-thirds of a mile. Take a right onto Whipple. Go a short distance and take left onto Williams Ave. That will lead you directly into the Traip Academy parking lot.
Race Numbers: You will pick up your race number at the Traip Academy before the race.
Parking: You can also park at the start of the race at Traip Academy in Kittery, but there will be no bus service back after the race.
Baggage: Please have your bag well secured and clearly marked with your race number and bring it with you to the Traip Academy in Kittery. It will be returned by bus to the finish line. A race volunteer will help you pick up at the finish. If you have a friend find your bag before you finish, it will facilitate an easier and more efficient flow after the race. Remember that this is a March race with no indoor facilities directly available at the finish line. The baggage will be securely kept on one of the buses, a short walk from the finish line. Just keep moving through the finish and you will be directed to the baggage.
Race Shirts: You can pick up your commemorative race shirt before the race at the Traip Academy.
Postponement: In the eventuality that weather is so bad that the race cannot be held, please contact us via phone 781-340-0616 or check Cool Running on the Web (www.coolrunning.com) on Saturday, March 28 for updates.
Portajohns: Portajohns will be located at the Hampton Casino bus loading area and at the finish, and at miles 7 and 17. Rest rooms will be available at the Traip Academy in Kittery before the race and at the Ashworth hotel at the awards ceremony.
Aid Stations: There will be six aid stations on the course. Water and sports drink will be available at the aid stations.
Trash: The Eastern States 20 Mile is conducted on state roads. Littering of any kind is not allowed on state roads. Please discard trash at the aid station, where volunteers can pick it up. This is especially true of Gel packets. If you use a Gel, please leave the wrapper at the aid station or put it in your pocket if you take it between aid stations.
Bus: If you need to take the shuttle bus to the start, they will load from the parking lot behind the Hampton Casino in Hampton Beach at 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. You can bring the $5 bus fee on race day.
The Finish Line: The finish at the intersection of rtes 1A and rtes 286 is very busy and congested. Once you finish the race, please show courtesy to the other runners and do not double back and get in the way of other runners finishing. You would not want others to impede your finish! Collect your baggage and keep moving forward to the buses, or stay in the area if it is a nice day and you want to remain at the finish line.
2009 Finish Line Note: If you have a friend meeting you with a vehicle, please be aware that construction in the Seabrook Bridge is very likely to slow traffic greatly, especially for those attempting to get back to Hampton Beach. It will be MUCH easier to take one of the official race buses back to Hampton Beach. If someone is still determined to meet you at the finish have him or her park on rte 286, well away from 1A, and then meet you past the finish line. If they try to park at the finish line, they (and you) will be stuck in heavy traffic for a long time.
Medical Emergency: If you need to drop out or have a medical emergency, please let a race volunteer or race official know. Ambulances will be on call. If you need to drop out of the race, do so at an official aid station if at all possible. Please do not drop out without at some point informing a race official.
Prizes: Awards will be given to the top seven male and female finishers, as well at the top three in each of the following age groups: 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69: 70 and over. You must be present at the Ashworth hotel to collect your award at the awards ceremony, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. No awards will be mailed.
10-Year Finishers: We will be honoring all 10-year Eastern States 20 mile finishers this year, with special commemorative embroidered jackets. If you have finished 10 Eastern States races (or will have finished your tenth this year) please let us know, so we can make sure we can honor you at the awards ceremony.
Course info: Please run on the right-hand side of the road. Do not cut the tangents, as this will create a traffic hazard. Just past Aid Station #1 at Foye's Corner (mile 4), the road is narrow and winding for more than a mile. You must run single-file in this section. At mile 13, you will bear slightly inland on Willow road, in order to avoid a dangerous, narrow curve on route 1A.
Course directions: START at Rice Library on Wentworth Street, Kittery. Maine. RIGHT on Walker St. LEFT on rte 1, over the Memorial Bridge (mile one). Bear RIGHT on Daniel Street, Portsmouth. LEFT on Pleasant Street. RIGHT on Junkins Ave to the end. RIGHT on South Street. LEFT on Sagamore Avenue, rte 1A (mile two). STAY on rte 1A South for the next 2 miles. RIGHT on Brackett Road. LEFT on Parsons Road. RIGHT on 1A, for the next 6.5 miles. BEAR RIGHT on Willow Road for one mile (mile 12.5). RIGHT on 1A South. RIGHT on Ashworth Ave. (mile 17).
